Stallergenes S.A. is announcing the setting up of a European phase-II/III clinical trial for testing the efficacy and tolerance of a tablet for desensitising sufferers of allergy to dust mites.
The double-blind, placebo-controlled multi-centre trial concerns 7 European countries. It is being conducted on 500 randomised patients and should make it possible to evaluate the efficacy of the desensitisation treatment that is based on natural extracts of D. pteronyssinus / D. farinae mites, taken daily and sublingually in adults, on the symptoms of allergic rhino-conjunctivitis. Initiated at the end of 2007, the treatment will last 12 months. The patients will then be monitored throughout the year 2009.
ABOUT ALLERGY TO MITES
Allergy to dust mites is a genuine public health problem. Depending on the country, this allergy affects as many as 50% of allergic patients, and as many as 80% of asthmatic children. Perennial rhinitis induced by mite allergy often manifests itself through a blocked nose and nocturnal symptoms adversely affecting quality of life in patients. The conventional pharmacotherapy gives only partial and momentary relief. Specific immunotherapy is the only treatment capable of changing the natural development of the allergic disease.
