Description:
The body is two to three centimeters in length and is divided into three different parts. Hornets can sting several times because their stinging apparatus is smooth rather than barbed.
The European Hornet should not be confused with "false" hornets such as the yellow-jacket (Dolichovespula arenaria) and the white hornet (Dolichovespula maculata).
Where they are found:
Throughout Europe although, as a result of human activities, the hornet is now an endangered species. Hornets build their nest inside dead trees or suspended from the roofs or beams of buildings.
