Immunoglobulins

The family of proteins which make up antibodies. Several different classes exist but it is the immunoglobulin E (IgE) class which is involved in allergy.

Inflammation

A reaction characterised by a local increase in temperature, pain, and an influx of leukocytes (white cells) from the blood. Inflammation is a major component of the allergic manifestations in asthma, rhinitis and eczema.

Interleukin

A type of protein which acts as a messenger relaying information between different white blood cells. There are many different interleukins but all of them are involved in some way in inflammatory phenomena. Interleukin 4 seems to be active in asthma. Certain interleukins have also been exploited in medical applications.
