Cell surface receptor

Many biological mediators which carry information between different cells do so by binding receptors expressed on the surface of the target cell (rather like how a letter ends up at the address specified on the envelope). The binding of a mediator to its cell surface receptor triggers an intracellular signal which leads to a specific response on the part of the target cell. In an allergic reaction, the binding of allergen molecules to corresponding antibodies on the surface of mast cells induces these cells to degranulate, i.e. to empty the contents of their intracellular granules into the extra cellular environment.
