Subcutaneous treatments

Phases and duration of treatment

Prescribed by an allergy specialist, injections are administered in a medically controlled environment and followed by an observation period of 30 minutes. These pain-free injections are given in order to administer the allergen subcutaneously (under the skin) on the arm between the elbow and shoulder.

Initiation and maintenance phase

  • The first phase called "initial treatment" aims at administering increasing doses of allergenic extract to the patient. During the first weeks of treatment, starting with a very low dose of the allergen in question, the dose of the product administered is increased until it reaches the maximum dose the best tolerated by the patient.
  • The second phase, called the “maintenance phase” can then start. The maximum tolerated dose at the end of the first phase is then administered at regular intervals (depending on the administration route and the sensitivity of the patient) during a period of time that varies between 3 to 5 years.
